Abstract: Recent research within developmental psychology has established the crucial significance of metacognitive and self-regulatory abilities for a range of outcomes related to educational success and emotional well-being.. This talk reviews a range of research in this area, including some of my own, showing that these abilities begin to emerge in young children and are powerfully supported by playful experiences. The significant implications of this research for practice in early educational and play settings are also discussed.
